Tutorial Six

Adding Text to an Image

In this tutorial I will show you how to add text to an image . You will need the PSP File you downloaded in Tutorial 4. Just in case you didn't save it, or you have jumped straight to this tutorial you can download it again Here

Unzip the file to your desktop or a folder on your pc and open the PSP Image.

Zeiva Layers

Your image will have opened like this, and hopefully Raster 5 will be the active layer.( Highlighted in blue in your layers palette. )

Click on the eye in that layer on the palette, a red x should cover the eye and the text should disappear from the image on your screen.

Now go to your text tool in the left hand tool bar, it's the A

Text Tool

Click on it, and your text tool bar will appear at the top of the screen:-

Text Tool Bar

Choose a font from the drop down menu, Size 72 points, Centre Alignment, left-right direction, Anti-alias Sharp, Stroke Width 0 and Create as Vector. Creating your text as a vector layer gives you an easy method of adjusting the size to your liking.

Now go to your materials palette, Close your foreground/stroke box (the top one) and then use your drop tool to choose a colour from your image for the text. I chose #0000DB for mine. Your palette will look something like this:-

Now left click into your image and a text box will appear on the image:-

Textbox

Type your text into the text box, then click on apply:-

:-Written text

Your text will appear in the centre of your image.

centre text

You will see that the text is surrounded by a dotted lined box, and that there is a central spot. Using your move tool

Move Tool

Centre it on the central spot and move your text to a position of your liking. If you want it to be bigger , use the nodes on the dotted lines to pull it to the size you require. I increased the size of mine and ended up with this:-

Text positioned

When you are happy with the size and position of your text right click into the Vector 1 Layer in the layer palette and convert it to a Raster Layer :-

Convert to Raster

Your tag is almost ready to save. It's nice to try and create a 3D effect if you can in your tags, and one of the easiest ways to do this is to add a drop shadow to your tube and text.

Drop Shadow 1

So go to drop shadow and apply a drop shadow with these settings:-

Drop Shadow 2

Now repeat the drop shadow changing the Horizontal and Vertical Settings to -2:-

Drop Shadow 3

Play around with these settings if you wish, it is all a matter of personal preference, and you might find something better than mine.

Now you are ready to save your tag. First got to Save As, and save the image in psp format so that you can go back to it another time and alter it again if you wish. Then Merge All Layers and save as a Jpeg. You now have another tag to add to your collection.
