Blend ModesDon't be put off by the title, this is not a tutorial which is going to teach you how to blend images, it is just going to introduce you to the Blend Modes which you will find in your layers palette:-
The best way to look at these modes is to actually play with them. Open a new image about 400 x 400 and flood fill it with black. Now copy and paste a tube into the canvas. I used a tube of a white carnation so I could see the differences in the modes:-
Now have a play and see what happens, I've shown a few shots here of some of the modes:-

Next I changed the tube layer mode to Soft Light and my tube appears to disappear:-

With my tube and a lot of the modes , the tube seems to disappear. With the white background and Difference Mode I got:-
As you can see, you can create some great effects with this tool. Play around with different colours, tubes and modes, and just see what you come up with. One tip with modes; when following tutorials always follow their instructions carefully when it comes to merging layers that have different blend modes as you will sometimes loose the effect if you merge the wrong layers. I hope you've enjoyed playing with these Blend Modes. If you have any queries please contact me.
